Project 3 Metatext

I found this project to be alot of fun. I got to change things I had written and just play around and see what came out of it. Although I used two things that were written with strict guidelines I think they resulted in interesting products.

For the first part I used part of a research paper I had written for English 384. I had to take a comic book and compare it to the theories of the assigned authors from class. I chose the issue of The Amazing Spiderman that was dedicated to the World Trade Center buildings collapsing on 9/11. The original paper talked about the racism experienced at the time and the comics reaction to it. It was dry and straight to the point since it was a research paper for class. Since the subject dealt a lot with hatred and tragedy I thought that using the Shannonizer to edit it with Hunter S. Thompson would bring more intensity to it then to counter it by having Dr. Seuss edit it. I really like the tone it ended up with, a little bit of silly sarcasm. My favorite line is "This is LSD" which can be saying in a way it's crazy. I think it brings much more meaning to the original subject like how it repeats "in recent years we serve hot dogs", hot dogs are usually referred to as American food as part of culture. A lot has changed after 9/11. The silliness almost captures the seriousness of the subject and I think it makes it more interesting.

For the second part I used a saved file on the computer at school which was just a gold quiz for someones class. Since golf is more reserved as a proper sport, quiet and sober, I thought it would be funny to use the redneck dialectizer. Golf is definitely not connected with what people consider redneck the way nascar and budweiser are so I think it gives it a humorous appeal. It serves to lighten up a perspective on a very uptight sport. My favorite part was question 5 which you would think would be worded differently for the original quiz but wasn't, it fit well.

Finally for the third part I used the cut up spell check idea to write a story. I basically wrote whatever came to my head which was ridiculous anyway without making sure I spelled things right, I just kept typing. I clicked on all the misspelled words and picked randomly at the suggestions. After I did that I took the new story and used google to translate it from English-Bulgarian-Dutch-Ukrainian. When i copied the story into the text box for my blog I used spell check prompts again. The result is interesting, the story became one of her and the birds going into the cave and not just her. My favorite line is "This Anteater waited for their friends to join the tea party, proteins and genotype", a strange mix for a party but adds to the strangeness. Overall I think it added a darker tone to it and surprising lines that make you want to make sense of them.
